Vanessa Thompson
LANDMAN
Vanessa has a BBA from the University of Oklahoma and is a member of the American Association of Professional Landmen. She is an accomplished Landman with extensive experience in both in-house and contract roles. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated proficiency in all phases of the asset lifecycle, including lease acquisition, asset maintenance, active development, and disposition. Vanessa’s skillset extends to contract drafting and review, process improvement, data analysis, decision-making, and cross-functional collaboration.
Land Supervisor/Landman: Vanessa worked for ConocoPhillips for 12 years, with experience in the San Juan, Delaware, and the Niobrara assets. She held roles in both mineral land and surface land, and she was a Land Supervisor for 8 years. During her tenure as the Niobrara Surface Land Supervisor (October 2018 – June 2020), Vanessa led a team responsible for negotiating and securing an Operator Agreement with the City of Aurora. This agreement was a significant milestone in protecting asset value and reducing permitting risk for the Niobrara asset in Colorado. Vanessa also played a pivotal role in supporting the Niobrara asset divestiture, engaging in due diligence, reviewing surface agreements, securing consents, and collaborating externally post-announcement. In her role as the Delaware Basin Land Supervisor, Vanessa was responsible for growth efforts, including lease acquisition and acreage consolidation via trades. She led the effort to strategically transform ConocoPhillips' acreage position through multiple trades covering over 10,000 acres.
Independent Contractor: Since March 2021, Vanessa has had the opportunity to apply her skillset as an independent contractor. She has continued to complete projects that require a knowledge base in both mineral and surface land. She has had a strong focus on title work in this period and has worked on several projects requiring contract drafting expertise to cure title issues and defects.
Process Improvement: Vanessa was named the Project Champion for the AFE Balloting use case within the OOC Oil & Gas Blockchain Consortium from February 2019 - March 2020. The project team, consisting of professionals representing 10 large oil & gas companies, was charged with testing the use of blockchain for balloting within the Land function. Under Vanessa's leadership, the project team completed an RFP and worked with an external vendor to successfully test the proof of concept in December 2019.
